Moved

We finally moved! ...well, not to Australia yet, to my mum's house for the interim.
Since we have sold our less than 5 year, fully renovated flat at our desired price, we have no place to stay till baby 2 arrives and we leave for Canberra. We actually sold our house and later found out that I'll need to take x-rays for my visa. By then I knew I was expecting. And even though my gynae said its relatively safe and low risk to take x-rays, I had made a decision not to go ahead with it, just in case.
This actually meant that suddenly all our plans have to take a sudden stop. By then we had already bought the tickets, sold the house and I had told my company that I was leaving. It was crazy. It took me many days to accept this change. In the midst of it, I had to find a school for Eliza and because I didn't want her in the afternoon session there was barely any school left with a space for her. I was stuck between choosing a childcare and an expensive private preschool. Thank God he led me to finding a kindergarten for her. Relieved!

Exhausted and sluggish

I have been feeling sluggish and tired and lazy boned. I didn't remember my 1st trimester during my 1st pregnancy to be so exhausting. Sometimes I wonder whether it's my incomplete sleep. I mean I get woken in the middle of the night by Eliza wanting some attention due to her scratching or her talking, or I get woken from my nap by ww cos we gotta move on to something like dinner or whatever. I wish I can sleep to
my heart's content, without anyone waking me up so that I can complete my sleep! Sigh.

Wasn't too fun when I threw up all my meals yesterday, the last one at 12:40am. Yucks. :6 but at least I felt better after that, usually. What I eat have to be chosen carefully. Fruits usually don't go down well...so I'm still sticking to meat, rice or fried noodles, actually anything unhealthy works quite well.

I'm still looking forward to better and more normal days ahead. There's lots to do. To pack and sort and prepare for our mega move. I can't do those when i feel so bed-ridden and pukey I really pray this nauseating 1st tri passes. I am so sluggish, I can't get any work done around the house, and I'm feeling kinda bad abt it. God's timing

Our wedding verse came from our favourite section of Ecclesiastics...that there is a time for everything..

"1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:
...
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. 13 That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. "
Ecc 3:1-11

I opened the devotional book to today's date and it's about God's timing.
"Of course, God's plans don't always unfold according to our wishes or at the time of our own choosing. Nonetheless, we can trust the benevolent, all-knowing Father as we wait patiently for Him to reveal Himself. Until God's plans are made clear to us, our task is to simply to walk in faith and never lose hope, knowing that His ways are always the best."

We have waited...and when God gives, even at the oddest of times, we still give thanks. Still we'll need to trust an walk in faith for the next journey that is ahead of us, a journey we weren't expecting. So we have unexpectedly expected. And just when we thought, after trying for a year, that i'll be unlikely to conceive....and was prepared to find out why, and was prepared to enjoy life in Canberra with one kid and lots of energy...God surprises us. In a nice way, though. :)

This in-between

We are kinda in between now. The plans that we can make is as far as next year and there goes that uncertainty. Uncertain of ...
- whether we'll be able to 'survive' there. ie if i can cook everyday for stuff that's good and healthy for Eliza too.
- how long Ww will take to finish his phd. the aim is 2years so we don't incur so much costs in terms of school fees...by our rough calculation, we have only enough to last us till end of our 2.5yr there.
- what is going to happen after Ww has finished his phd. Will he be able to find a job there? (esp when the demand for history teachers don't seem to be a lot) Will we be coming back to singapore? What will he be doing if he comes back?
- whether we can tolerate the cold (yes cold is nice but i don't quite fancy the idea of living through sub-zero winter...plus Eliza & I have dry skin so loads of moisturizing to be done all over)
- whether we should have continue to try for a baby now or when we're there. I mean we have tried for a year and still no results...seems like the 67% chance of getting pregnant with one less fallopian tube seems more difficult than it sounded to me initially. If we have one now, i'll have to deal with all the changes while being pregnant. If we have one later in Australia, i'll have to deal with all the changes alone with Eliza, in a foreign land. After being so used to having family around to help, I'm not sure if i can manage it alone with a toddler. (somewhat la..tho there's still Ww..but he'll be studying most of the time..which is like working hours)...oh and a toddler who isn't too warmed up to babies.
Sigh...if it's already so difficult to get pregnant (ok i know there're really more people who have difficulties but i kinda hope that Eliza and her sibling's, (if she has one), age be not too far away). Anyway, if it's so difficult, trying again after another year might just mean trying another year without results. :S Amongst all these realities, i'm also so aware that God is the one who is authority over all these things, whether he gives or not give is His blessing and it is a good thing even when i might not think so.

Anyway all this uncertainties is our walking on water. Stepping out in faith, with trust in Him who gives all things abundantly to us. This is something i'll con't to struggle with, with God...but i know His grace is sufficient for us.

Planning for the future

God knows where we will tread next. He has put the desires in our hearts to lead us.

It's the mysterious balance of who's the one who opens doors and pushes doors.

We have talked about the things that move us, things that frustrate us, things that inspire us. It has been almost 2 years of that finding, searching and we've thought about many possibilities, variations of the main line of thought, refined the paths and at some points of time, we waited. Many things we talked about and plan for came out of the things in our lives that we believe in, the values we want Eliza and our future children to grow up with, the aspirations of my dear husband. There are days when i will listen to Ww talk about some issues again and again, till at some point i was bored, the topics frustrate me when it makes him talk about it in such an upset manner.

And now a door is opened. He has waited longer than the time they said they would get back to reply. We had made other plans, in case this one didn't work out.

So we will venture forth. Whatever the challenges that will await us, whatever sufferings we will bear, or the fun that we will share.

Starting school later

I read this from Homefrontier

"Child-development experts, however, consider these sterile tools (flash cards, tv , computer games) inferior to more social and emotional activities such as talking with or reading to children. These specialists agree that the only thing shown to optimize children’s intellectual potential is a secure, trusting relationship with their parents. Time spent cuddling, gazing and playing establishes a bond of security, trust and respect on which the entire child-development pyramid is based. “We have given social and emotional development a back seat,” says UCLA’s Tyler, “and that’s doing a great disservice to kids and to our society.”

"Asked in a recent study what skills children need in order to be prepared for school, parents of kindergartners routinely cited definable achievements such as knowing numbers, letters, colors and shapes. Teachers, however, disagree. Far more important, they say, are social skills, such as sharing, interacting with others and following instructions. Kids who come to school with a mastery of these less showy abilities stand a better chance of knocking off not only reading and writing when they are eventually presented but everything else that comes along as well. “Intelligence is based on emotional adequacy,” says child-development expert T. Berry Brazelton. “The concept of emotional intelligence is at the base of all this.”"

I do feel slightly pressured to get Eliza in some pre-school before she turns 3, say like in the next half of the year. My sil said that since she likes to learn, why am i not putting her in pre-school. Since there's no harm having her home, where she interacts with family, i think it's fine that she's not in school yet. I guess i can save her schooling money for now :)

Though i do think that learning colours, shapes, alphabets is so part of our everyday life that you don't quite need formal lessons to learn them! It's everywhere! so we talk about them day in day out, some weeks we love alphabets, we learn counting from counting birds we see or the steps we climb. These few days it has been about tracing the alphabets with fingers. It's kinda fun, and the books we read reinforces all these.

Anyway, it's comforting to know that it's ok to not hurry all the schooling and the learning. I gave up flashcards sometime back cos i realized that if we learn phonics to learn to read, then we don't need flashcards! argh! gosh what was i thinking!

Waiting

I haven't been in writing of moods much lately...I've lapsed into laziness or the writing bug has not been biting much.

I feel like we're in a waiting mode. Waiting for our future to unravel itself. Ww's waiting for an answer from the uni, then I'm waiting to see whether i need to make mega plans for the short-term or plans for the mid-term.

Then we're waiting for another baby, this we're not sure whether he/she will come. After my ectopic, it seemed like it wasn't that easy as before to conceive. One less fallopian tube makes such a difference or is my body still going through recuperation? It's 1 1/2yrs since it happened. I think it is more that i didn't want the age gap between Eliza and no.2 to be too wide for some strange reason that they won't be close if the age gap is wide. (you can't compare me & my sis with our 10yrs apart, i don't wanna wait 10yrs to have another baby!). Sometimes i feel like i wanna tell God, that if i can't have 3 or more, then 2 is still better than 1.

God sheds some light on His timing, that i needed to settle my periodontal problem before it is safe enough to conceive. My next appointment is in June and it has been postponed cos i was just too busy at work, or that the appointments are fully booked this & next week. Periodontal disease has implications on pregnancy that causes in low-birth weight babies / pre-term babies. So it'll be another 1-2months before it is 'safe' to try.

So in my impatience, God help me to have a patience, to see that there is a time for everything. This is the point where i say, God you're in control, not me.

Pressures on mums of Preschoolers

"When there are children in the house, a wife needs her husband’s understanding more than ever.

Youngsters between two and five years of age have an uncanny ability to unravel an adult’s
nervous system, with their constant talk and their endless questions. Furthermore, they’re a perpetual danger to themselves and others throughout the day.

Even if mum begins her morning with guarded optimism, by 4pm, the pressures often reduce her to a lump of play dough.

It’s a well-known fact that human beings tolerate stress much more easily if at least one
other person know they’re enduring it. This is highly relevant to young mothers.

The frustrations of the day are much more manageable if husbands take time to comprehend them.

Even when a man can’t change the situation, his respect for his wife and his awareness of her difficulties make it easier for her to handle them again day after day. "

I have only one to contend with. So it is still quite manageable, i feel. Obviously, if i have more than one, without anyone to help or to have company with, till my hubby comes home...probably i might turn into a lump of clay too.
Well, if God willing, i still don't mind being a mum of preschoolers. Soon please. Part of me is impatient, part of me is wait-ful upon God. I will wait for God's timing (or at least a year before we go seek help) cos i start to see a glimpse of why we have been waiting for months already without any news.

On homeschooling

I am still exploring the option of homeschooling and reading various books, websites, organizations, blogs of mums who do that, etc. Last night while talking about Ww's uncertain application for phd, we also talked about why we want to homeschool. For me, it is so that Eliza will grow to have an education that grows in her a love for learning, one that is not marred by competition nor is it success-driven.

But i'm also half-hearted about it, i'm uncertain of my ability to carry out homeschooling at all, and i do think the good variety of programes / friends in schools are great too. Yet i'm reading different accounts from different places about homeschooled children that are quite promising. See this article.

Ww's for homeschool because of the system here. If we are going to be here in SG, he would rather Eliza be homeschooled. If we were to be in Aust, he wouldn't mind giving the schools (ok..it's the private Christian schools) a try.

There's so much so much ahead as i learn to teach, from scratch.

Why she fell asleep at 9pm yest and 930pm today?

Yes and she went to the room for bedtime at the same time.

I'm learning patience in while putting Eliza to sleep for bedtimes. I get quite easily frustrated when Eliza doesn't fall asleep for a myriad of reasons, reasons which i feel are not necessary. Sometimes the frustration are really uncalled for and i just needed to learn to cool off and not take it so hard. Sometimes i just needed to be more understanding of Eliza and that she needs more time. But i'm not dumb, there are times when i sense that she is just pushing the time to be awake. [this is so common isn't it? I do that too. I'm still trying to sort out that disparity].

We are not robots, so we don't sleep the exact same time or take the same time to fall asleep, but the principle is that when Eliza's sleepy by bedtime, she needs to sleep. Actually it's better to catch her before she's really too sleepy, cos when she's at that state, she's less co-operative and more likely to take longer to sleep. Maybe that's what happened today.

So one change we need to keep to:
- one book only for bedtime reading (i told her we can read many many books in the day but we bring only one book for before bedtime reading)
